yoshi’s wedding

Posted on Nov. 23, 2009 by geoffropuff

when i was in high school, i hosted a student from kashiwa municipal high school for about 2 weeks.  now that i live in japan, i get to see him and hang out with him sometimes.  well, this past weekend, yoshikazu ando got married and i was lucky to be able to celebrate with him and his other friends.

japanese weddings and receptions are much different than american ones.  first of all, i didn’t attend the wedding ceremony or the reception.  i attended the nijikai or 2nd party.  the wedding ceremony and reception are usually limited to family and close friends.  the second reception is made up of all the people you want to celebrate with but can’t invite due to limited numbers.

all of us had to pay money to attend the 2nd party but also didn’t have to give any gifts.  at the party, there was food and an open bar, but the thing that surprised me the most was the raffle.  you read that right, there was a raffle where they gave away prizes.  and these weren’t just centerpieces and small gifts.  they gave away the following items among other things: bicycle, television, nintendo wii, ipod nano, etc.

and then, just like that, it was over.  we were probably only at the restaurant for maybe 2.5 hours.  afterwards, we all went to an izakaya and drank some more.  i was so hungover for my basketball tournament the next day.

anyways, i know yoshi won’t be reading this blog but i just wanted to wish him and his new wife all the best.  he only spent 2 weeks with me in torrance but in that time he became my brother.  congratulations, yoshi!
